One Year of Welcoming Refugees

ONE YEAR OF Welcoming Refugees

by Kristen Maxwell, Refugee Resettlement Director

Let me tell you a story of a remarkable journey—the journey of our first year of Refugee Resettlement at Mission Adelante. If you didn't know, refugee resettlement programs run on the government's fiscal year, meaning we opened our doors to the possibility of welcoming refugees on October 1, 2023. However, we didn't see our first case arrive until the end of January 2024; from January through June, we received a steady flow of cases, with 40 clients over five months. We were just over halfway to meeting our goal of welcoming 75 individuals in the year. We had seen clients from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Sudan, Nicaragua, The Congo, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela.

Then, we received a call from the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), requesting organizations to increase their numbers to meet the overwhelming need for resettlement. After discussion and prayer, we received permission from our State Refugee Coordinator to increase our resettlement goal for the year to 100 individuals. We welcomed 60 new Americans to Kansas City from early July to mid-September. We began to see our first clients settling in, establishing themselves in our community, calling this new place their home, and turning around to welcome other newcomers.

One thing we didn't account for was how, in our agreement with PRM, they are allowed to send us up to an additional 10% of our designated goal, so we ended up rounding out the year welcoming an additional ten people in the last few days of September, with 9 of them arriving on the very last day of Fiscal Year 2024, wrapping up our year with 110 new Kansas Citians!

When we welcomed our first couple on January 25, 2024, none of us could have predicted the growth our team would undergo. We’ve expanded from 1.5 staff members to 8 full-time team members. This growth is a testament to our dedication and the success of our program, the commitment to welcoming well, and because of the partnership of World Relief and the Kansas Office of Refugees. We now have programs catering to employment, medical, and English needs. Some of our clients and their children have joined in with the other programs hosted by Mission Adelante. We've also witnessed the Church of Kansas City extending the warmest of welcomes to our new friends, and for this, we are incredibly grateful!

A Sisters Love

A Sister’s Love

by Carla Garcia, Kids Ministry Director

I was the oldest sister in my family growing up, which meant having a lot of responsibility over my two younger brothers. My parents both worked two jobs and being an immigrant family meant there was always a financial goal to be working on. My parents were around before going to work early in the morning and then arrived back home late at night. This meant I was responsible for my brothers during the daytime.

When school was in session, my workload was cut in half since I’d only be in charge of my brothers during the evening. I would make them meals, make sure they did their homework, and walk them to and from school. For the majority of my childhood and adolescence, it felt like I was a third parent in my household. Due to this familial dynamic, my brothers and I grew very close. Till this day they share their worries and struggles with me, are elated to celebrate their victories with me, and count on me for support and guidance in their adult lives.

My family was not religious growing up, in fact, we only went to church for special occasions, and maybe only prayed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. My childhood was one that was full of turmoil and lacked hope. My life changed forever as a young adult when I met Jesus, it was like a light had been turned on in my life. Since that moment, I have a renewed sense of hope – A hope that is so big and so strong that no matter what comes my way, I know I will be standing firmly on solid ground. After this key moment in my life, I would pray from time to time for my family to have this same experience.

Recently, my baby brother began working with me at Mission Adelante. It has been so rewarding and fulfilling to see him step up as a leader and begin learning skills that will help him in the future. He is great with the kids, has invested so much time and care into his relationship with them, and has brought so many new fun ideas to our ministry team. Many times, I find myself pondering and treasuring these things in my heart like Mary in Luke 2:19.

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.   Luke 2:19 NIV

My heart was so full the first time I heard my baby brother pray at our staff huddle. Like Mary, I knew it was nothing that I had done - it was the Lord, who had a plan for my brother, all along, and the time had arrived for me to bear witness. I continue to pray for the rest of my family to encounter Jesus in a way that is so powerful, so tangible, so clear. But for now I watch Erick closely, relishing in his new found hope and admiring all that the Lord is doing in him and through him.

Arts Camp

ARTS CAMP

by Mikya Wright, Children Ministry Apprentice

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalms 139:14.

That was the theme of this year's Arts Camp because we believe wholeheartedly that every child is fearfully and wonderfully made! The Lord is faithful as always, and that was shown time and time again during our Arts Camp last week.

This past Monday through Thursday our building was so full of excitement and laughter! We welcomed over 100 kids through our doors, and over 20 volunteers helped pull this huge event together. I am beyond grateful for the generosity and the love shown by our amazing volunteers who took time out of their super busy schedules to come serve with us! We had awesome community presenters come and share with the kids about the different arts. We had Caroline from Epic Clay Studio share about pottery, and Liz from UMKC came and played the flute for the kids, and even made up a song with their help!

We had 11 classes - arts & crafts, crochet, jewelry, sports, keyboard, guitar, keyboard, dance, theater, cooking, and candlemaking. The kids had a blast learning new skills and developing friendships with other students and teachers! On top of all the fun, the week went so smoothly and everyone stayed safe, which is just as important to us as the fun times. On the last day, we had a water party to celebrate! We had two waterslides, a dunk tank, face painting, lots of food, and a huge water balloon fight to end the week!

I want to say a huge, huge thank you to Carla Garcia, Patrique Harris, Erick Flores, and the interns! Carla and I have been planning Arts Camp 2024 since last year, and I truly would not have been able to lead last week without all of her guidance and support. She has been the best mentor and supervisor that I could have ever asked for, and she has empowered me to be the best version of myself.

Patrique has also been one of my mentors since I did the summer internship three years ago! She supported me so much during camp, as she does every day! And, she taught her dance class the Wacky Dip which was so fun to watch. I have known Erick for a while because we both went to the Teens Program back in the day! He started working as an apprentice a few weeks ago, so we have partnered very closely with the interns leading various programs. He was a fantastic co-leader! Even though this was his first Arts Camp, he dove right in and didn’t hesitate to do what needed to be done. He goes above and beyond for the kids here at MA, and I can already tell how deeply he cares for each of the kids here.

Lastly, thank you to our amazing summer interns, Eli, Sonia, Unisha, and Keziah! They got to camp early and stayed late, and they went the extra mile the whole week to make everything go as smoothly and as fun as possible. It has been a full summer for them, but they never cease to show up with the most energy in the room, ready to serve our community! Carla, Patrique, Erick, and the interns - I love you all so dearly and am overwhelmed by how much you all mean to me!

I think it is safe to say that Arts Camp 2024 was a success! As I was walking a few kids home after the first day, I asked them how their day was, and the 6-year-old boy, whose family just moved to KC as refugees said, “It. was. perfect.” And I can’t help but agree! Thank you to all the kids, volunteers, and staff for making Arts Camp perfect!!

Expecting the Unexpected: Welcoming Refugees with Mission Adelante

Expecting the Unexpected: Welcoming Refugees with Mission Adelante

by Kristen Maxwell, Refugee Resettlement Director

When Jarrett reached out to me about 18 months ago with the idea of opening a resettlement agency at Mission Adelante in partnership with World Relief, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  When we got our first assurances in November of 2023,  I wasn’t sure what to expect.  And when our first arrivals made it to Kansas City in January of 2024, I still wasn’t sure what to expect. We have now welcomed 51 individuals from 23 cases to Kansas City, and I’ve learned to expect the unexpected.

We have seen many unexpected hard things, from difficulties securing apartments, and first jobs.  Influxes of many cases at the same time, to having a hard time finding interpreters for minority languages.  We’ve had folks who have health problems and clients displaced by an apartment fire.  We’ve walked with folks as they’ve learned that America isn’t always like what they’ve seen in the movies, as they’ve been shaken by cultural changes and had to face past traumas head-on.

But with the unexpected hard has been the unexpected good. With the addition of KSOR grants came the addition of many new team members.  We have seen relationships and friendships formed with volunteers and community members.  We’ve met some great landlords who want to see new Americans thrive. We’ve seen job placements with a starting wage of around $17 an hour!  We’ve seen hugs and smiles as clients settle in and move on from having intensive needs but come back to pay us a visit or bring us some empanadas. We’ve met new people and extended a warm welcome to 51 people from all OVER the world!

If I had to summarize my time so far back with Mission Adelante, it would be to expect the unexpected. It’s a wild ride, but it is beautiful. The great news is, that we’ve got plenty of room on this wild ride!  We are looking to add volunteers to our Good Neighbor Teams and English classes.  We are also looking for landlords and employers to grow our networks with. If you would like to come along with us, please reach out!

Adelante Arts Camp 2024

Adelante Arts Camp 2024

by Carla Garcia, Kids Ministry Director

It is that time of year again! Summer is here: the sun is shining, the AC is blasting, and at Mission Adelante the summer activities are well underway. We have been planning for this summer for a few months now and it is great to finally be able to see those plans come to fruition! From a crazy, fun car wash to weekly learning and joy at our kids and youth programs, it has already been an exciting summer. Adelante Arts Camp 2024 is the next big event on our radar!

This year Adelante Arts Camp is from Monday, July 8th to Thursday, July 11th. Our apprentices, Mikya Wright and Erick Flores, will be solely leading this year’s camp. It will be exciting for them to use their leadership skills and God-given gifts and talents to lead our volunteers and campers. We have increased the number of classes we are offering this year to 11! We have cooking, theater, arts and crafts, sports, candlemaking, and much more. The camp will take place from 10am to 2pm each day and breakfast and lunch will be for each camper. We are excited to announce that we will have a delicious cookout and a water carnival on our last day of camp!

None of this would be possible without the help and generosity of our amazing volunteers and donors! People from all over the city, representing different churches and organizations, are eager to join hands with us in this summer adventure. It has been magnificent to see how God is working through others to bless the kids in our community. Thank you to all those who have been a part of this journey to ensure our kids have an amazing time at Adelante Arts Camp 2024.

Celebrating Support, Friendship, and Faith

Celebrating Support, Friendship, and Faith

by Veronica Garcia, Refugee Education Director

I’ve been on staff at Mission Adelante for over a year and a half now. I can’t believe how time is flying. I never thought the phrase “time flies when you’re having fun” would be so true in my life.

As I sit and reflect on my time here so far, so many things have changed, but I am grateful for the doors opened by the Lord. I would like to share with you a few things I am so so grateful for.

My family. I wouldn’t be here without the support of my mom, step-dad, grandmother, and boyfriend. They have been my biggest supporters since I first mentioned I was interested in working here. They supported me through the sale of my home in Gladstone, looking for housing in KCK, and a special shout-out to my parents for being rockstar volunteers in my Refugee ESL program. Your encouragement and support of me and my dreams have been amazing. Thank you so much

My friends. Most of my close friends live out of state, so finding friendship and community with the staff here has been one of the highlights of my life. Patrique, Carla, Mikya, and Innocent have been the best people to laugh, cry, and share life with. I am so thankful for our friendship and lunch dates all together! The friends I have found in the other staff members have been encouraging for me too. I didn’t know working with a ton of homies would be so slay!! (I taught them the slang slay)

My mentors. I wouldn’t be who I am and in my position today without Gissell Vazquez and Kristen Maxwell. Gissell pushed me to become a leader and an overall better version of myself. When I started working here, I was so scared to meet new people, especially if they didn’t speak English. I just didn’t know what I was doing. Gissell was with me every step of it and took the training wheels off when she had to. I am so thankful for her mentorship and friendship during her time here. I miss you, Gissell!  I am also so grateful for the friend I found in Kristen! We began Refugee Resettlement together and while stressful at times, we learned to depend on each other. She is an incredible leader and I learn so much from her everyday. Thank you for your leadership, Kristen!

The Lord. If I ever doubted God wasn’t real in the past, I would tell myself that God lines up steps years in advance, even if we don’t realize it. I wouldn’t have imagined in high school that I would be working for a ministry & refugee resettlement. The friendships I have already made with the refugees has been a beautiful thing. I couldn’t have imagined years ago that I’d have new friends from Nicaragua, Sudan, and Afghanistan (and more to come!). The Lord TRULY knows the desires of your heart and makes the path clear. I am so thankful that the Lord was persistent in lining up a pathway for me to go down, even if I took a wrong turn or two.

What are you grateful for today? Maybe the weather that is turning into Spring, or maybe there was a win in your life recently. Just know that we are celebrating with you. And if you aren’t celebrating something right now, remember we are praying with you. I look forward to connecting with you again soon!

Welcome to the team, Innocent!

Welcome to the team, Innocent!

by Patrique Harris, Youth Ministry Director

2024 has gotten off to a great start here at Mission Adelante! In January, Innocent Jean Marie joined our team as the newest Ministry Apprentice! In his new role, he will support Carla Flores and Mikya Wright in the Children’s Ministry, and me in the Youth Ministry. For context, Mission Adelante’s Ministry Apprenticeship is a one to two-year mentor-guided training program for emerging ministry leaders like Innocent. As a full-time staff member, Innocent will explore his calling with practical ministry leadership experience. We hope that this apprenticeship experience will equip Innocent whether he decides to pursue ministry further or for any career path he opts to pursue.

Mission Adelante’s 2021 Summer Interns (from left to right – Shae, Edna, Innocent, Mikya, and Flori)

Personally, Innocent’s presence on our team has been further confirmation of the way God is moving in our ministry. I met Innocent almost three years ago when I first moved to Kansas City for the Youth Ministry Director role. Our incredible apprentice at the time, Ranjana, had a heart for refugees in our neighborhood from African countries and had developed a close relationship with several families, including Innocent’s family.

Ranjana, Innocent, and Mikya performing a traditional Nepali dance during the 2021 Summer Internship.

Innocent’s family is of Congolese descent but due to civil wars, were forced to flee to Uganda. Innocent was born and raised in a refugee camp in Uganda and his family was ultimately resettled in the United States in 2017. After some time, Ranjana befriended the family and as she got to know Innocent she became committed to his growth and encouraged him to be a part of Mission Adelante’s Summer Internship in 2021. Her persistence is the reason we crossed paths with Innocent. Innocent ultimately jumped on board and was part of the first summer internship group I managed. Innocent thrived that summer. His jovial demeanor captivated kids and his confidence grew immensely! Ranjana’s influence empowered Innocent to use his gifts to serve others, and as God would have it, Innocent is now paying it forward by investing in kids and teens, just as Ranjana did for him!

Innocent and his guitar students at Arts Community

We are so thrilled to have Innocent on the team. You can catch him mentoring youngsters in Adelante Arts Community, Leaders-in-Training, Adelante Youth Club, Leadership Training Project, and even Latino Church! Join me in welcoming him to the team. Feel free to send a note of encouragement to his email – innocentj@missionadelante.org.

Your 2024 Goals

It's Never Too Late to Set Your 2024 Goals

by Luis Magana, Partner Engagement Director

Have you considered that one-third (34%) of U.S. adult citizens planned to make New Year's resolutions or set a goal for 2024? If you're like me, you might enjoy processing ideas and plans for a while.

Perhaps you're still contemplating your goals for 2024, and what I found helpful is to reflect on what I have learned in 2023 and use it as a foundation for setting new goals. Allow me to open my heart and share with you my journey in 2023.

Often, people shy away from setting goals because they fear starting something they might not finish. However, goal-setting is a personal journey, and nobody should be supervising our individual aspirations.

The key question is how to set realistic goals and follow through. While there's no one-size-fits-all recipe, reflecting in what we learned in 2023 might help us to create a vision for this year. I think this has been instrumental for me to set my goals.

Let me open my heart and share with you five things I learned in 2023:

  • Discipleship is not merely sharing a book but sharing life.

  • God's will is not always safe, but it's always the safest place to be.

  • We're not in a hurry - God's timing is never too early or too late.

  • Your political vote doesn't determine the strength of your relationship with Jesus, spending time with Him does.

  • God doesn't just want more of me; He wants all of me.

These lessons go beyond setting goals; they help create a vision of who I want to be in 2024. Whether your aspirations involve reading more, eating more healthy or spending more time with the Lord, be intentional in living your journey.

What did you learn in 2023? What’s your motivation for 2024?

A Personal Reflection of 2023

A Brief Personal Reflection of 2023

by Veronica Garcia, Refugee Education Director

My beloved childhood dog: Oreo

Happy new year! For me, 2023 was full of change, adapting, and growth. I didn’t expect 2023 to turn out the way it did for me, but in the final minutes of 2023 I said to myself, “I’ve grown so much this year.” It sounds funny but I felt this year was my first year of true “adulting.” I navigated heartbreak when my beloved childhood pet passed away, I sold my condo in Gladstone and moved to KCK, and I celebrated 1 year at a job that I could only dream about having when I was just 17 years old. An honorable mention is all the car problems I had too, haha. A lot happened this year that seems minimal in retrospect but really helped mold me into a new mindset for 2024.

Saying goodbye to my first home in Gladstone

And this mindset is… I CAN. I recognized that I was an adult when I turned 18 and 21 but really had no idea what it meant. The bills, the 40 hour a week job, taking care of a home, and most importantly taking care of myself. But this past year showed me that I really can do those things and remain sane. It just took some time to figure out my rhythm!

I can continue working hard and fulfilling my dreams of working with immigrants and refugees. I can work hard on my physical & mental health by trying to eat healthier and find a workout routine that works for me. I can take care of myself when I’m sick and live alone (I can testify this because I was sick the whole month of December!) I can go out of my comfort zone and try new things, even when they initially scare me. I can change my mindset from being constantly unsure to standing on who I am in Christ who strengthens me.

I am hopeful for what 2024 holds. 2023 taught me that I really can’t expect the unexpected but I can rise above, adapt, and grow from new experiences either positive or negative.

I’m praying that 2024 is fruitful for all of us; our professional lives and personal lives and whatever else may come our way. Please be praying for Mission Adelante’s programs and our incoming refugee families that will be arriving soon! Looking forward to connecting with you more in 2024!!

New Beginnings in 2024

New Beginnings in 2024: Mission Adelante's Journey into Refugee Resettlement

by Kristen Maxwell, Refugee Resettlement Director

The new year is here, and we are celebrating new things and goals.  As many of you have heard by now, Mission Adelante has been on an adventure, getting ready to do a new thing in 2024.  We are welcoming refugees as a resettlement agency affiliate of World Relief!

I rejoined the staff team in August and was immediately thrown into my new role with a meeting with KSOR (Kansas State Office of Refugees). Throughout the meeting, I felt like a student learning a new language. As a former teacher, I thought educators spoke with a lot of jargon and acronyms; it turns out they have nothing on the field of refugee resettlement.  I spent the whole meeting writing down what I didn’t understand and about an hour afterward looking it all up!

Here is an example the top is unexplained, and the bottom is better explained:

You can see how and why we use acronyms and understand that our whole staff is learning this new language together.

We did indeed accept our first batch of assurances on December 18th, meaning we could receive information about our first families traveling in the next few weeks.  When they arrive, we will support them through the R&P (Reception and Placement) Program.  We are very excited about this new journey and would love for you to pray with us.  Also, If you want a new way to serve in 2024, jump on board with us. We promise we will teach you this new language, too!

Refugee Expansion Gets Real with Property Purchase and First Families in the Queue!

by Jarrett Meek, Founder/Pastor/Executive Director

Our plans to expand into refugee resettlement and acquire the adjacent properties are becoming a reality! We’re just a few days away from the end of 2023, and it is crunch time! We’ve seen tremendous generosity and support for our new refugee resettlement initiative and the acquisition of the adjacent properties to accommodate this expansion and our new programs. We’ve set a “God-sized” goal to raise $500,000 by year-end to purchase the properties with cash, and God has indeed responded. To date we have received $357,000 in committed funds— nearly enough to close with cash on the commercial property on January 5th. The closing for the residential house is scheduled for January 31st. We’re praying and still working on completing the $500,000 goal in order cover both closings and move into our renovation phase without debt. There are a few days left in 2023. This is our time! Would you consider making a year-end contribution, either before December 31st or by mid-January, to help us reach this goal? Gifts of any size are a big encouragement and help us towards our goal! Giving is easy at https://www.missionadelante.org/give

Our First Refugee Families are in the Queue!

Just before Christmas we received word about the first families we’ll be welcoming in 2024. Though we don’t have travel dates yet, we have received detailed information about each family and where they’re from, which has suddenly made this project seem very real! Here is a quick rundown of our first refugee families and countries of origin:

  • Family of 5 from Eritrea

  • Family of 3 from The Democratic Republic of the Congo
