How can serving reveal a lifelong passion?

How can serving reveal a lifelong passion?

By Shreya Gautam, Leaders-in-Training volunteer

Becoming a part of the Mission Adelante community has been the highlight of my year!  I am a medical student, which translates to studying, classes, and not much else. But amidst all of that work and stress, it felt like LIT was the only thing keeping me going.

I spent each week looking forward to the two hours I would get with the young students at LIT. There’s no question that even now, at the beginning of our summer break, I miss them wholeheartedly.

Mission Adelante is a community like no other.  I got to see how children of greatly different familial and ethnic backgrounds are like a true family, playing with and teasing each other as siblings do.  I got to see the insane dichotomy of their innocence and wittines how they are so young and yet so insightful. Understanding this about these kids helped me understand more about myself and what I want to do in the future.

I will forever be grateful for LIT - not only for the temporary joy I felt on the Wednesdays I spent with the kids but for reminding me of my lifelong passion. Working with Mission Adelante this past academic year has solidified in my mind the fact that I want to spend my future working with kids, and I know that without LIT, I might have never realized that.

A big thank you to Shreya for her love and passion to serve the children of Mission Adelante!  Interested in learning more about our multicultural tutoring program? Please contact meganf@missionadelante.org
