Between Shadows and Refuge

Between Shadows and Refuge

by Yanelis Lopez, CMA Director

"The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them."
- Psalm 34:7"

Join us on the fascinating journey through the life of David, where the shadows of persecution intertwine with the found refuge, as expressed in Psalm 34. In a tumultuous period, David anointed as the future king, is compelled to flee from the fury of Saul. This reigning king, consumed by jealousy and fear, seeks David's life, his most loyal servant. The story reaches its climax when David, desperate to evade persecution, arrives in the Philistine city of Gath.

Imagine David facing the imminent threat and opting for an unusual and risky survival plan. To avoid recognition and protect his life, David feigns madness. He portrays himself as an imbalanced man, allowing saliva to run down his beard and marking doors in an apparently irrational act. This unconventional tactic proves to be the crucial strategy that grants him a safe passage among the Philistines.

In the midst of this context, David writes Psalm 34. As we explore the words of the Psalm, we understand the profound context of this experience and can connect with David's emotions amid these circumstances. The Psalm becomes a genuine expression of David's trust in the Lord, even when facing darkness and the need to hide among apparent enemies.

In the midst of these circumstances, the lived promise of Psalm 34:7 emerges: "The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them." This declaration comes to life in David's story, revealing how, even in his darkest moments, the divine presence surrounded him, offering protection and deliverance. This promise invites us to reflect on the constant presence of God in our lives, providing security and hope. By integrating this truth into our daily lives, we find comfort and certainty, trusting that the angel of the Lord is encamped around us, ready to intervene and deliver us in times of need.

by Carla Flores, Kids Ministry Director

Amar a Dios y a nuestro prójimo,

Welcome to the team, Innocent!

Welcome to the team, Innocent!

by Patrique Harris, Youth Ministry Director

2024 has gotten off to a great start here at Mission Adelante! In January, Innocent Jean Marie joined our team as the newest Ministry Apprentice! In his new role, he will support Carla Flores and Mikya Wright in the Children’s Ministry, and me in the Youth Ministry. For context, Mission Adelante’s Ministry Apprenticeship is a one to two-year mentor-guided training program for emerging ministry leaders like Innocent. As a full-time staff member, Innocent will explore his calling with practical ministry leadership experience. We hope that this apprenticeship experience will equip Innocent whether he decides to pursue ministry further or for any career path he opts to pursue.

Mission Adelante’s 2021 Summer Interns (from left to right – Shae, Edna, Innocent, Mikya, and Flori)

Personally, Innocent’s presence on our team has been further confirmation of the way God is moving in our ministry. I met Innocent almost three years ago when I first moved to Kansas City for the Youth Ministry Director role. Our incredible apprentice at the time, Ranjana, had a heart for refugees in our neighborhood from African countries and had developed a close relationship with several families, including Innocent’s family.

Innocent’s family is of Congolese descent but due to civil wars, were forced to flee to Uganda. Innocent was born and raised in a refugee camp in Uganda and his family was ultimately resettled in the United States in 2017. After some time, Ranjana befriended the family and as she got to know Innocent she became committed to his growth and encouraged him to be a part of Mission Adelante’s Summer Internship in 2021. Her persistence is the reason we crossed paths with Innocent. Innocent ultimately jumped on board and was part of the first summer internship group I managed. Innocent thrived that summer. His jovial demeanor captivated kids and his confidence grew immensely! Ranjana’s influence empowered Innocent to use his gifts to serve others, and as God would have it, Innocent is now paying it forward by investing in kids and teens, just as Ranjana did for him!

We are so thrilled to have Innocent on the team. You can catch him mentoring youngsters in Adelante Arts Community, Leaders-in-Training, Adelante Youth Club, Leadership Training Project, and even Latino Church! Join me in welcoming him to the team. Feel free to send a note of encouragement to his email – innocentj@missionadelante.org.

Navigating Life's Challenges

Navigating Life's Challenges: A Journey of Faith, Prayer, and Deliverance"

by Elaine Reimers, Latino ESL Ministry Director

Recently my life has taken an unexpected turn down a road I perceive will include ditches, potholes, and possibly stormy conditions. Truthfully, I think I would rather use the free will that God has given me to turn and walk the other way, leaving this undesired and inopportune season of my life in the dusty road behind my weary, dragging feet. After all, there are a few references in the Bible that imply we as humans have free will over our lives.

Take for instance 1 Corinthians 10:23 (NIV) where Paul wrote to the Corinthian Church saying that although we say “I have the right to do anything,” it does not mean that“everything is beneficial”; he ends that passage saying that “not everything is constructive.”

Then, there is Paul’s letter to the Galatians that says:

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love”

(Gal. 5:13, NIV).

I can’t think of a single moment of suffering I have been through in my life that I would have chosen at the time. The truth is, although we can choose things like the clothes we pick out in the morning and what we eat for lunch, no one can choose to have a problem-free life.

You have likely heard the phrase: “if it’s not one thing, it’s another.” I imagine this phrase has been translated into thousands of languages because problems are no respecter of nationality, race, nor economic status. Problems can be served on gold, ceramic, or wooden platters. Maybe this only happens to me, but I feel like just as I get one issue settled and I am feeling good about life again, something else is knocking at the door ready to steal away my peace of mind, my joy, and my hope; often leaving me with worry, doubt, and frustration. I have been through my share of problems and have yet to come up with the equation to solve them all in a set amount of time or steps. Each one is unique and requires a specific approach.

If I could create a math equation to solve the problems we face in this life, it would look something like this, I think:

In other words: if you add Prayer and Holy Grit together, and then multiply the sum times Faith to the Power of God you get Deliverance.

The equation seems simple enough, right? But when I examine it, what I discover is that our Deliverance ultimately depends on the Power of God-not us! What God requires of us is to pray and strive to maintain an attitude of steadfastness and endurance along with keeping our faith active and thriving. This can be easier said than done!

It takes work on our part to keep us going until God delivers us. Let me assure you that this work is not done in vain, rather it is preparing you for the next inevitable and unexpected trial to knock on your door.

I encourage you the next time you are answering the door to that unwelcome guest, to fall to your knees and cry out to God. Ask Him to remind you to pray unceasingly and to face whatever issue it might be with a steadfast heart and an unwavering faith in Him. Lay down your feelings of worry, doubt, and frustration and reclaim your peace of mind, your joy, and your hope! Then, get to work! In His timing, you will see your deliverance!

After reading this over and over while writing it the last few days, I am feeling encouraged by my own words-by the message that God shared through me. Thank you, Jesus, for the power of Your Word and the resolve that You have so graciously given me in this season.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

Your 2024 Goals

It's Never Too Late to Set Your 2024 Goals

by Luis Magana, Partner Engagement Director

Have you considered that one-third (34%) of U.S. adult citizens planned to make New Year's resolutions or set a goal for 2024? If you're like me, you might enjoy processing ideas and plans for a while.

Perhaps you're still contemplating your goals for 2024, and what I found helpful is to reflect on what I have learned in 2023 and use it as a foundation for setting new goals. Allow me to open my heart and share with you my journey in 2023.

Often, people shy away from setting goals because they fear starting something they might not finish. However, goal-setting is a personal journey, and nobody should be supervising our individual aspirations.

The key question is how to set realistic goals and follow through. While there's no one-size-fits-all recipe, reflecting in what we learned in 2023 might help us to create a vision for this year. I think this has been instrumental for me to set my goals.

Let me open my heart and share with you five things I learned in 2023:

  • Discipleship is not merely sharing a book but sharing life.

  • God's will is not always safe, but it's always the safest place to be.

  • We're not in a hurry - God's timing is never too early or too late.

  • Your political vote doesn't determine the strength of your relationship with Jesus, spending time with Him does.

  • God doesn't just want more of me; He wants all of me.

These lessons go beyond setting goals; they help create a vision of who I want to be in 2024. Whether your aspirations involve reading more, eating more healthy or spending more time with the Lord, be intentional in living your journey.

What did you learn in 2023? What’s your motivation for 2024?

A Personal Reflection of 2023

A Brief Personal Reflection of 2023

by Veronica Garcia, Refugee Education Director

My beloved childhood dog: Oreo

Happy new year! For me, 2023 was full of change, adapting, and growth. I didn’t expect 2023 to turn out the way it did for me, but in the final minutes of 2023 I said to myself, “I’ve grown so much this year.” It sounds funny but I felt this year was my first year of true “adulting.” I navigated heartbreak when my beloved childhood pet passed away, I sold my condo in Gladstone and moved to KCK, and I celebrated 1 year at a job that I could only dream about having when I was just 17 years old. An honorable mention is all the car problems I had too, haha. A lot happened this year that seems minimal in retrospect but really helped mold me into a new mindset for 2024.

Saying goodbye to my first home in Gladstone

And this mindset is… I CAN. I recognized that I was an adult when I turned 18 and 21 but really had no idea what it meant. The bills, the 40 hour a week job, taking care of a home, and most importantly taking care of myself. But this past year showed me that I really can do those things and remain sane. It just took some time to figure out my rhythm!

I can continue working hard and fulfilling my dreams of working with immigrants and refugees. I can work hard on my physical & mental health by trying to eat healthier and find a workout routine that works for me. I can take care of myself when I’m sick and live alone (I can testify this because I was sick the whole month of December!) I can go out of my comfort zone and try new things, even when they initially scare me. I can change my mindset from being constantly unsure to standing on who I am in Christ who strengthens me.

I am hopeful for what 2024 holds. 2023 taught me that I really can’t expect the unexpected but I can rise above, adapt, and grow from new experiences either positive or negative.

I’m praying that 2024 is fruitful for all of us; our professional lives and personal lives and whatever else may come our way. Please be praying for Mission Adelante’s programs and our incoming refugee families that will be arriving soon! Looking forward to connecting with you more in 2024!!

2023 A Year of Challenges, Blessings, and Thankfulness

2023 A Year of Challenges, Blessings, and Thankfulness

by Mikya Wright, Children Ministry Apprentice

As we enter the new year, I am filled with such gratitude and appreciation for all of the people in my life. This previous year 2023 has probably been one of the craziest years in my life so far! Between graduating high school, moving out of my parents’ house, and starting a new job and college, there has been a lot of change in my life! With all of this change comes a lot of different emotions and experiences. I have been pushed and have grown in ways I was not expecting! While all of this change has mostly been positive, it is still sometimes hard.

I continually thank God for all of the people who have supported me this past year and still continue to do so! I am so grateful for all of my family and friends that have supported me through the transition from high school to all that adulthood brings. I could not be more thankful for this job here at Mission Adelante that has given me countless opportunities to grow and learn.

The opportunity to work with kids in my own community and lead programs that I once attended when I was little has been more amazing than I could ever imagine. I am especially grateful for my amazing supervisor and mentor, Carla Garcia, who leads me with such patience and grace and teaches me so much! And for mentors like Patrique Harris, Veronica Garcia and Kaytlynn Magaña, who I love doing life with! All of these ladies mean so much to me and have helped shape the woman I am today.

I am immensely grateful for all of the volunteers and program participants here at Mission Adelante! Without all of you this would not be possible, thank you for helping make our community a better place and spreading the love of God! As we enter this new year, I pray for guidance and safety for everyone from the Lord, and may He continue to bless you in 2024!

New Beginnings in 2024

New Beginnings in 2024: Mission Adelante's Journey into Refugee Resettlement

by Kristen Maxwell, Refugee Resettlement Director

The new year is here, and we are celebrating new things and goals.  As many of you have heard by now, Mission Adelante has been on an adventure, getting ready to do a new thing in 2024.  We are welcoming refugees as a resettlement agency affiliate of World Relief!

I rejoined the staff team in August and was immediately thrown into my new role with a meeting with KSOR (Kansas State Office of Refugees). Throughout the meeting, I felt like a student learning a new language. As a former teacher, I thought educators spoke with a lot of jargon and acronyms; it turns out they have nothing on the field of refugee resettlement.  I spent the whole meeting writing down what I didn’t understand and about an hour afterward looking it all up!

Here is an example the top is unexplained, and the bottom is better explained:

You can see how and why we use acronyms and understand that our whole staff is learning this new language together.

We did indeed accept our first batch of assurances on December 18th, meaning we could receive information about our first families traveling in the next few weeks.  When they arrive, we will support them through the R&P (Reception and Placement) Program.  We are very excited about this new journey and would love for you to pray with us.  Also, If you want a new way to serve in 2024, jump on board with us. We promise we will teach you this new language, too!

Refugee Expansion Gets Real with Property Purchase and First Families in the Queue!

by Jarrett Meek, Founder/Pastor/Executive Director

Our plans to expand into refugee resettlement and acquire the adjacent properties are becoming a reality! We’re just a few days away from the end of 2023, and it is crunch time! We’ve seen tremendous generosity and support for our new refugee resettlement initiative and the acquisition of the adjacent properties to accommodate this expansion and our new programs. We’ve set a “God-sized” goal to raise $500,000 by year-end to purchase the properties with cash, and God has indeed responded. To date we have received $357,000 in committed funds— nearly enough to close with cash on the commercial property on January 5th. The closing for the residential house is scheduled for January 31st. We’re praying and still working on completing the $500,000 goal in order cover both closings and move into our renovation phase without debt. There are a few days left in 2023. This is our time! Would you consider making a year-end contribution, either before December 31st or by mid-January, to help us reach this goal? Gifts of any size are a big encouragement and help us towards our goal! Giving is easy at https://www.missionadelante.org/give

Our First Refugee Families are in the Queue!

Just before Christmas we received word about the first families we’ll be welcoming in 2024. Though we don’t have travel dates yet, we have received detailed information about each family and where they’re from, which has suddenly made this project seem very real! Here is a quick rundown of our first refugee families and countries of origin:

  • Family of 5 from Eritrea

  • Family of 3 from The Democratic Republic of the Congo

  • Family of 4 from Sudan

  • Family of 2 from Nicaragua

If you’re interested in volunteering with our new refugee resettlement ministry, you may use the interest form on our website to let us know! https://www.missionadelante.org/refugees

The Story of Christmas: Extraordinary in the Ordinary

The Story of Christmas: Extraordinary in the Ordinary

by Yanelis Lopez, Associate Director

Christmas is almost here, that awesome time of the year that many of us absolutely love. You know, the one that shifts everything in the family calendar and centers around a date that holds immense significance in human history. We're talking about the story of Jesus, and trust me, it's a mix of the extraordinary and the everyday.

So, here's how it all starts: an angel named Gabriel pays a surprise visit to Mary, a down-to-earth and devoted young woman from Nazareth. The angel's greeting is great, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you" (Luke 1:28), and that sets the stage for a journey that's nothing short of unexpected and transformative. It all unfolds through the eyes of this ordinary woman, making the extraordinary feel surprisingly relatable.

Let's zoom in on the details: Nazareth, a not-so-flashy town, and Mary, an ordinary yet extraordinary woman. Picture this – a young, unmarried woman facing potential social hiccups and serious challenges. But, hey, her unwavering acceptance of the divine plan is like a beacon of faith. Suddenly, this little town of Nazareth, not exactly a headline grabber in the world's affairs, becomes the backdrop for a divine revelation. It's like all these seemingly small pieces click together to create this beautiful mosaic of divine intervention, showing that every thread in the Christmas story has its purpose and meaning.

Now, as we reflect on Luke 1:26-38 during this Christmas season, let's not lose sight of the beauty in the small and seemingly ordinary. Embracing the humility and simplicity of the Christmas story gives us a profound lesson: that greatness often arises from the seemingly insignificant, and the smallest details can lead to the most extraordinary outcomes. Christmas, at its core, teaches us to appreciate the beauty in the small, because it's through these modest moments that the great plan of God is revealed.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

Sisters in Christ

Sisters in Christ

by Carla Flores, Kids Ministry Director

It is so important to have friends that understand you, see and validate you, and encourage you. I am blessed to have a group of friends here with me at work that do just that. Mikya, Patrique, Veronica, and I have become close friends in the past year. It all began with a very important question, “Did you bring lunch today?” It just so happened that none of us had brought anything and we were starving after our staff huddle. We headed out for burritos at Bonito Michoacan and a friendship was formed.

These friends understand me when I share about faith, my difficulties as a teacher, and even very personal struggles too. They hear me, validate my feelings, and give the best advice. Patrique pushes me to “step on toes” and be more direct about what makes me uncomfortable. At first, this was difficult for me because I tend to be very passive and just take what I am given. I love how Patrique advocates for herself and those around her and pushed me to do the same. I can say that since I’ve been friends with Patrique, I have grown to learn how to defend myself and push back to create good boundaries for myself. She inspires me to not just accept and settle with the cards that I’ve been dealt but instead shuffle the cards and choose for myself.

These friends also make me smile and laugh in the face of adversity. Recently, I was overwhelmed with confusion and sadness for changes in family with my parents and siblings. I’ve always had to be the peacemaker in my family and now I had to create boundaries to ensure that my husband, daughter, and I were not dragged into situations that could affect our peace and happiness at home. It was difficult but after sharing with my friends about what happened, it became much more light. We laughed at the silliness of the situation. Veronica is great at helping me see that. She helps me understand that there is laughter and goofiness in serious situations. That things will eventually work out and that in the meantime a smile and a little laughter will help too. Veronica is easy going, funny, and always comes up with the best lunch spots. She inspires me to laugh at life especially in those moments where it can all seem so dark.

These friends also have the most comforting, encouraging words. As a teacher to so many kids, I can come across some pretty difficult situations. From being behind in math to very serious issues like developing unhealthy coping mechanisms and even abuse. Through it all, Mikya is always there to share an encouraging message. She sees me, the work I do, and the passion I do it with. She also understands that these heavy situations weigh me down and can overwhelm me. She is always there to comfort and motivate me with inspiring words. It can be as simple as a common look shared across the room or a quick thank you. Mikya inspires me to be more helpful and to encourage those around me just as she has done to me.

Let’s pray: Thank you heavenly Father for the vibrant community you have blessed me with, for friends that make me laugh, push me to grow, and encourage me. Thank you for putting them in my life and giving them a mission and purpose for their life that is similar to mine. I am so grateful I do not have to do this work alone because you have brought amazing friends alongside me. I pray that I can be a great friend to them too, that my ears could fully listen, my mouth would share kindness and compassion, and that You would be drawing us together in a deeper community with one another toward greater unity with you. In Your Son Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Teen Slang Stew

Teen Slang Stew

by Patrique Harris, Youth Ministry Director

As Youth Ministry Director, I have the pleasure of leading Mission Adelante’s youth fellowship, Adelante Youth Club! Every Wednesday, teens from our neighborhood gather to play games, worship, and learn together. Over the years, I have noticed that though teens may go to different schools, play different sports, and come from different cultures, they all seem to speak a common language (not plain English) – the vocabulary of which I have slowly but surely picked up. So, here are the ingredients for a classic Teen Slang Stew. If you can’t follow, refer to the substitutions for more clarity! I am hoping I will have the instructions for the recipe in 2024!

Celebrating our new citizens

Celebrating Citizenship Student Success at Mission Adelante

by Veronica Garcia, ESL Manager

Leading the Citizenship program at Mission Adelante is extremely rewarding. Each Tuesday I see students walk in that are ready to learn and accomplish something incredible. At Mission Adelante’s Citizenship program, students are learning civics, history, and practicing their English with the volunteers. If you don’t already know, to become a naturalized citizen, you have to be a permanent resident for at least 5 years. Once you start the naturalization application process, you have to learn 100 civics questions. One hundred civics questions about the history of a different country AND in your second language? That sounds difficult- and it is. A lot of the volunteers admit they don’t even know the answers to the questions when they first begin with us.

Despite all this difficulty, I want to proudly share that we have had 4 people this year pass their Citizenship exam and interview.

Nancy, Juan, and Elvira are students that have been attending regularly the last few trimesters. I met Nancy when I first started at Mission Adelante last August, Juan began attending classes in January, and Elvira began attending classes at the end of May. The dedication and perseverance these students showed every week was amazing to watch. They became more confident in their English and developed beautiful friendships with their teachers.

Elvira and her document saying that she passed!

Nancy passed her exam on June 1st! This is her at her ceremony.

Juan celebrating with his family

Juan and Elvira passed on the same day, October 25th. There was a lot of celebrating in the volunteer group chat that day!

Another person I helped personally is named Conchita. She needed help practicing for the English portion of the naturalization interview. I met with her weekly to go over her application and practice what to say to the USCIS officer when they interview her. She passed the English portion on September 26!

Let’s celebrate together the amazing success of these four individuals and what they accomplished in 2023. Please keep the other students in the citizenship program in your prayers. They are all working very hard. I am so honored to be a part of this program!

An Expansion Property for Mission Adelante's New Refugee Resettlement Program!

Concept rendering by Katrina Mills

by Jarrett Meek, Founder, Pastor/Executive Director

If you’ve been following along lately, you’ve probably heard that Mission Adelante is on the cusp of a major new milestone. We’ve entered into a partnership with World Relief and for the last 10 months we’ve been preparing to open a refugee resettlement office at Mission Adelante. This is a major undertaking that will launch in January, as we receive our first new arrivals.

One of the conversations that had just begun among our board of directors was related to the future space needs of this new ministry. With the anticipation of a growing staff team and additional programs to serve newly arriving families, expansion was on our minds. Literally, the week after our board started this conversation, the property adjacent to Mission Adelante came on the market with a 4000 square foot commercial building and a 2 bedroom home. We now have these properties under contract. We are absolutely in awe of this unexpected provision that feels like the very hand of Providence!

Things are moving fast as we move forward on acquiring this building that is adjacent to Mission Adelante and the house that goes with it.  We have started our due diligence and are working on plans for renovation of the building to provide office space for expansion of our refugee resettlement team, classroom space for new refugee programming, and storage/warehouse space for items donated for refugee families.  The home that comes with the property will be used to house newly arriving families until we can get them into apartments.

There have been a few catalytic moments in the history of Mission Adelante: the inception of our ministry, the launch of our programs to serve Bhutanese Refugees, and the opening of Adelante Thrift. Refugee resettlement and this opportunity to acquire these adjacent properties is another one of these perfectly timed “God opportunities” that will catapult us into new territory as an organization. This is indeed the most significant new milestone for us since the launch of Adelante Thrift and is worthy of special attention and support!

  • Total Campaign Goal: $750,000 (enough to purchase and renovate both properties)

  • Phase one- Year-End campaign (purchase): Raise $500,000 by year end. This will take the place of our normal year-end campaign.  As of November 9th, before the public launch of the campaign, we already have commitments for lead gifts totaling $172,000!

  • Phase two (renovate): Raise an additional $250,000 by June 30th to complete renovations. We are currently working on our renovation plans.

Our closing date for the adjacent property is slated for January 5, 2024. That’s right around the corner! Our God-sized goal is to have enough funds raised to come to closing with cash and without debt. We’re inviting all of our friends, partners, and donors to make a special, over-and-above contribution to support this cause, before year-end! This is our time to shine! Will you join us?

This is our time to shine! ¿Se unirá a nosotros en esto?

Christian Community Development Association Conference 2023

CCDA 2023

by Mikya Wright, Children Ministry Apprentice

At the beginning of October, myself and Mission Adelante staff went to Cincinnati for the Christian Community Development Association Conference! What a fun yet informative time! There were many diverse speakers who touched on an array of topics, including healing and inclusion within our ministries. We were also able to connect with a lot of different people at the conference. Hopefully the relationships that were formed there will continue to grow outside of the conference! We were also able to connect with organizations that we already partner with here in KC! We had a great dinner with Hope Center and an awesome lunch with Joe Gonzales and Phil Kim from Snack Shack. Not only did we develop relationships with other organizations, but we also got closer as a staff. Being together that much led to some really deep conversations but also funny and lighthearted ones! By the end of the week the relationships internally and externally of Mission Adelante had grown exponentially and still continue to grow!

What an incredible week at CCDA! This experience has not only challenged me to approach our multicultural community with a fresh and different perspective of love and understanding but has also deepened my appreciation for our amazing volunteers. My heart is filled with gratitude for these dedicated individuals who, week after week, generously invest their time and demonstrate unwavering love for our community

Psalm 28

PSALM 28

by Yanelis Lopez, Associate Director

In a world facing countless trials and tribulations, the words of Psalm 28:6-7 offer an everlasting source of comfort and inspiration. As we navigate the complexities of these times, this ancient scripture remains a constant reminder that even amidst adversity, we can find solace in faith and trust in a higher power: Jesus!

6 Praise be to the Lord,

for he has heard my cry for mercy.

7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;

my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.

My heart leaps for joy,

and with my song I praise him.

In verse 6, " Praise be to the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy" we can draw parallels with the many voices raised in recent times, supplicating for mercy and relief. Humanity has gone through many stages of terror and uncertainty. This verse serves as a reminder that even when our pleas appear to echo in a vast and indifferent world, divine compassion listens.

Moving to verse 7, " The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me…" we can find encouragement to lean on faith as a source of strength and protection. In times of uncertainty and change, we are reminded that placing trust in our GOD can offer comfort. Our God is closer than ever; He is our source of hope and peace.

Psalm 28:6-7 encourages us to reflect on the enduring power of faith and the unity that arises from our shared human experience. It speaks of the profound strength that emerges from the depths of our challenges and hardships. As the world grapples with the trials of the day, these verses stand as an eternal source of hope and inspiration.

Welcoming Refugees

Welcoming Refugees to a Brighter Future in Kansas City

by Kristen Maxwell, Refugee Resettlement Director

I never thought I would be back writing articles for the Adelante Express, but it is wonderful to share with you today. Since I left Mission Adelante in 2017, I have stayed connected with the refugee and immigrant communities, working with Catholic Charities for about a year and then with the KCK School District for four years as an ESL Teacher. When Jarrett called me with the opportunity to join the work of Mission Adelante again in a new capacity, it didn't take long for me to say yes. I am excited to partner with World Relief as we welcome new Americans to Kansas City.

A photo from my first trimester with Mission Adelante, March 2010!

The world is facing one of the most significant displacement crises in history. Over 117 million people have been forcibly displaced due to conflict, persecution, and other catastrophes. And with the current conflict in the Middle East, I imagine that number will keep growing. Among the displaced are nearly 29 million people formally identified as refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees. The scale of this crisis is mind-boggling. It would be about the equivalent of 20 people leaving everything behind each minute to escape war, persecution, or terror.

A person identified as a refugee has fled their home and country because of "a well-founded fear of persecution due to his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion." The United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention set this criteria. The US has a rich history of resettling refugees, as far back as 1948, when the first law explicitly addressing refugee admissions was implemented due to individuals fleeing the aftermath of World War 2.

But sadly, only a fraction of the 29 million people identified as refugees will have the opportunity to rebuild their lives through resettlement. In 2020, less than 1% of the world's recognized refugees were resettled, leaving many languishing in protracted displacement, vulnerable to exploitation and despair. Refugee resettlement is a lifeline for those who have no other options. It's a chance for children to receive an education, for families to access healthcare, and for individuals to regain their dignity and self-sufficiency.

We are excited to expand resettlement in Kansas City and extend a welcome to refugees.  We will join the organizations already doing great work with refugee resettlement in Kansas City, including our long-time partner, Catholic Charities. And on the Missouri side, Della Lamb and Jewish Vocational Services.

The overarching umbrella of Refugee Resettlement could include many programs as it grows, but we are starting with the Reception and Placement program(R&P). R&P offers newly arrived refugees a structured 90-day period of support as they adapt to life in the United States. This program provides essential services such as securing safe and furnished housing, initial financial assistance for basic needs, access to medical care and vaccinations, cultural orientation, assistance with documentation like Social Security numbers, job placement services, enrollment in English language classes, and connections to community resources. The goal of the R&P program is to empower refugees to rebuild their lives, become self-sufficient, and integrate successfully into their new environment, all within a challenging but crucial 90-day window.

When looking at it through that lens, that is a lot to accomplish in 90 days. I can't imagine arriving in a foreign culture and being expected to work a job by the end of my first 90 days there.

We have been approved to assist in the resettlement of 75 refugees starting from January to October 2024.

This is a big undertaking, and we are going to need help in 4 main ways:

  • Pray: We believe that prayer is a significant part of the work that we will be doing. Pray for the families that will be coming, pray for the volunteers that will serve, and pray for the resources that will be needed.

  • Share: Help us to spread the word of the work the Lord is doing. Do you have a church or small group we could share with? Could you share our posts on Social Media? Could you tell a friend? Please help us share about refugee resettlement in Kansas City.

  • Connect: Welcoming refugees requires a lot of resources: financial, material, and human connections. We are looking for connections in the areas of rental housing, apartment furnishings, and employers who may be interested in hiring clients. If you or someone you know can help in these areas, we would love to hear from you.

  • Serve:  We will have one-time, ongoing, individual, and group opportunities to serve available.

If this is something that you are interested in, we invite you to join us.

We will host two events in November to orient potential partners and volunteers to this incredible opportunity. The first event, Tuesday, November 7th, at 9:30 AM, will be geared toward church and community partners.

The second event, which will take place on Saturday, November 11th at 9:30 AM, will invite people interested in knowing more about what volunteering will look like to come and learn.

Also, please share this information with your friends, family, and neighbors who may be interested in joining in the work of welcome.

Click here to RSVP for either of the informational gatherings!

If you cannot make either of the events and would like additional information, please contact me at KristenM@missionadelante.org

Mutual Love and Care

Mutual Love and Care

by Carla Flores, Kids Ministry Director

Hi friends! It has been quite a while since I last wrote an article to share with you. This year has been filled with blessings and so many new experiences! I got married and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Sofia. She is such a healthy and calm baby!

I had always heard that it takes a village to take care of a child. I love being part of a child’s village. It is what I do at Mission Adelante, supporting parents and their children in their academic and developmental growth. I believe I am good at helping others however, it is not easy for me to accept or even ask for help. This past year, God pushed me and slightly forced me to begin learning to ask for and accept help. I quickly learned to delegate in our kids’ programs, passing on responsibilities to our amazing volunteers and interns. I learned so much during my time delegating and enjoyed watching beautiful relationships grow with the volunteers and kids.

Then, during my maternity leave, I got to see the other side of that and I truly got to experience having a village/community support me and my family. Families from our community, texted, called, provided meals, shared tips, and so much more. I felt loved and cared for and it was beautiful to experience the other side.

Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and fulfill the law of Christ.”

God wants us to not only help and love others but also accept love and help. It is reciprocal caring and sharing life that makes our life better and glorifies God.

Thank you to all of those who have reached out, shown love to, and cared for my family during the past few months. I am thankful for you and all you have done for us.
